An exceptional collection of pottery pieces for varied tastes at varied prices; all thrown on the premises by an experienced, highly talented old-school craftswoman.
Where to find it
Dersingham Pottery can be found on the B1440 road through the centre of Dersingham village, 1 mile from Sandringham Estate. Its large premises date back to Edwardian times and used to be a grooms cottage and stables belonging to the Royal Estate. It’s an impressive location for an artist and suits the owner, June Mullarkey well. She’s been in residence here for over 42 years now and this experience is reflected in the quality of her pottery pieces.
What to expect
Every piece of pottery within this treasure trove of stoneware and porcelain goodies has been thrown on the wheel by June herself. After watching her produce a couple of pieces, I can assure you a deep love of her craft goes into every single item. Her standards are high and her knowledge is endless. As a result you’ll find a wide variety of pieces with an even wider selection of finishes. Over the years June has experimented with different clays, glazes and techniques to form some original and unusual results. I was particularly drawn to the pieces that incorporated local carstone, shells from Heacham and even lavender ash. I’ve no doubt you’ll find something you love here and chances are it will be within your budget too.
What can you buy here?
It’s more a case of what can’t you buy here as every area of functional and decorative homeware has been thought of and produced. On the lower end of the price range you’ll find jugs and sugar bowls from £5.50 and a wide selection of mugs, ice cream dishes and cereal bowls from £8.50. There’s an endless versions of plates and serving dishes as well as vases, lamps and ornamental pieces. If extravagance if on your agenda, there’s large pieces of impressive grandiose for up to £185 that are sure to cause impact and awe in your home. Theme wise, coastal colours dominate (sea blues, turquoises, and pale greens) but there’s a wide variety of tones and styles – purples, lavenders, reds, neutrals, black, gold, oriental and endless textual pieces and designs. Every taste is covered.
Gallery of artwork and photography
It’s not just June who is hugely talented, her whole family are budding artists. In what was the old stables area of the shop you’ll find a gallery of her husband, Ben Mullarkey's paintings. Originally a technical artist, he now paints with an intriguingly modern method that produces some eye catching results. With uplifting acrylic colours and an unusual block technique, you’ll find spell-binding canvases of local scenes such as Sandringham, Thornham and Brancaster Staithe. Their daughter, Siobhan Williams, is a commercial photographer and has taken some stunning shots of Norfolk as well as nature’s colours occurring in views from around the world. Her cards and mounted photographic images are also for sale.
Dersingham Pottery is a must visit for anyone interested in arty things, appreciates quality products or is looking for something to brighten their home. Stop by, have a browse and a chat and treat yourself to a piece of handmade Norfolk – you’ll treasure it always.
The shop is open every day 10am to 5pm during peak times and Tuesday to Sunday at all other times. Please telephone to avoid disappoint during quieter times though.
