A rustic barn cafe in the centre of Holt serving great home cooked food complete with a quiet and sheltered courtyard setting for alfresco summer dining.
Where to find it
In the centre of the delightful town of Holt, where you’ll find a vast array of unique shops to browse, you’ll find The Barn bistro cafe, down a side alley that leads on to a wonderful little courtyard of independent gift shops. An old converted barn, you’ll find rustic decor, art for sale on the walls and a small bar counter. Outside there’s plenty of sunny tables and an idyllic quiet location.
What to expect
Helen has owned this cafe since 2012 and clearly takes great pride in the place. Together with a trained chef and friendly front of house, Angie, the bistro has become hugely popular with the locals who frequent weekly, sometimes daily, to have a bite to eat and informal chat. There’s a homely feel here with tourists slotting right in too, all are welcome.
The barn is lovely, spans over two floors with good natural light. The artwork is pleasing on the eye and also for sale. The likes of impressionist David Jackson and expressionist models of Linda Roast exhibit here amongst others. If I had to say just one thing that sells this place though, it would be its outside space. In summer the secluded and sunny courtyard comes alive with people relaxing and socialising, enjoying delicious lunches and grabbing a coffee with friends.
What can I buy here?
The food is good, fresh to order and from local suppliers. There’s a breakfast menu served until 11.30am, a lunch menu served until 3pm and also an evening menu now kicking off for the summer. Fully licensed as well as a coffee house, their beans are roasted from Green Farm Estate in Norwich. Afternoon teas as available and allergies are catered for; you’ll find at least two or three gluten-free cakes, as well as wheat-free bread and soya milk options. Expect to find a full range of sandwiches, panini’s and jacket potatoes as well as omelettes, burgers and even sausage and mash. The evening menu has fish dishes and more fancy mains, all cooked to perfection and reasonably priced too.
So if you find yourself in Holt this summer, do yourself a favour and take time out to enjoy this hidden gem. Stop by, sit in the sun and be pampered for a while. Life will still be waiting for you but you’ll tackle it head on after a pick-me-up of sunshine, chatter and home-cooked food.
The Barn Bistro is open Monday to Saturday 8.45am to 5pm and Sundays 10am to 4pm. During the summer it’s also open Friday and Saturday evenings 5pm to 8.30pm. Booking is advisable for evening meals. The Barn also offers private parties catering for up to 14 guests.
